Dear Friends,
It's hot as heck here in Middle Georgia! This is my absolute favorite season of the year, when some of my best memories are made. Read on for all the news about upcoming events and specials from Close to My Heart!
But first, a personal note:Focusing on What's ImportantWe are living in times when much of our news seems unsettling and even down-right disturbing. The death of so many famous people. People that I grew up singing to their music, watching them on tv. I know I'm telling my age, but it is really sad to know that this world is turning so fast and time does not stand still for anyone. During these times, it's all too easy to focus our attentions on the things that worry us, and not on those things in life which really make us who we are: family and friends, our relationships with them, and the experiences we share. But I believe that these things - the things which make us who we are - are the very same things that will sustain us as individuals, and as a nation.
This month, I'm making a special effort to keep from focusing on the negative and to use at least a part of my energy every day to scrap what's really important. In twenty or thirty years, when my children Jacob and Haley look back, wondering what life was like in late 2008, I don't want their whole perception to be based on the grim news recorded by the media during these times. I want them to also know and to remember that we were a strong family, that we had good friends, that we worked hard for what we believed was right, that we shared worthwhile experiences with each other, and that we were lucky to have been living in the greatest country in the world. It's important to keep our perspective positive, because we create the world we live in and we define our own destiny.
Fall is the time of harvest in our part of the world. Throughout history, and across all world cultures, harvest is that point in the year when people reap what they have sown, and take time to recognize and express gratitude for blessings. It is a natural time to pause and to refocus our attentions.
Will you join me? Make it a priority. Be a journalist. Take some time to record what is really important to you - whether it's the big occasions or the everyday moments. Be an artist. Create something beautiful that you can share with someone, whether it's a scrapbook page for your family album, or a lovely "just because" card to send to a friend who needs a lift. I promise it will change your outlook - and if enough of us change our outlook and focus on what's really important, who knows what we can accomplish?
